Throughout my life, I have always been an animal lover. While I consider myself a “dog person,” I love all animals. When I was growing up, I actually had a cockatiel named Woodstock, but we often referred to him as “Pretty Bird” because he would say that (and only that) on repeat. I currently have two golden retrievers, Teddy and Hank. Hank is 3, and Ted is 14 years young. My dogs, along with my son and husband, are my entire life. Like most pet owners, I take lots and LOTS of pictures of my dogs, so when I started my photography business, it was no question that pet portraits would be a service that I offered.
One day, my friend reached out to me to ask if I could take some pictures of her dog, as he was ill and unfortunately nearing the end of his life. I immediately made room in my schedule. This was different than a normal pet session. Whereas most pet sessions are energetic and joyful, this session was slow-paced, raw, and emotional…and it touched my soul.
I started doing some research into end-of-life pet photography, and came across The Tilly Project. which is a nonprofit organization created by Lauren Kennedy in order to connect pet owners with end-of-life pet photographers around the world. I immediately submitted my information to become part of the project. Soon after, I received another inquiry about doing an end-of-life session for a dog who was crossing the rainbow bridge the following week. Again, I immediately rearranged my schedule and said, “I’ll be there.” This session was the most emotional session I’ve ever had. The sweet pup had just turned 13 at the time, which was the same as my Ted, so it really hit home with me. The owner cried, I cried, and I was able to provide her with the beautiful, intimate photos that she can cherish forever.
When I was in high school, I lost my golden retriever to cancer at just 7 years old, and it was devastating. Losing a pet is something that you can never fully be prepared for…even if you know it’s coming. As a photographer, I want to capture those final, beautiful moments for you to honor your beloved pet, and I want it to be accessible to everyone. Therefore, all of my end-of-life sessions are FREE (mileage fee added if distance is more than 30 miles from Sandusky, OH). I will come to you, whether it’s the final moments in the vet’s office, or in the comfort of your own home. I would be honored to work with you. Contact me if you have any questions or are interested in booking. I’ll be there.
